Original U.S. 1820s Army Officer Chapeau-Bras Collapsible Bicorn Hat with White Plume

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. Now this is a fantastic piece of history that dates back to the early years of the United States Army! A Chapeau-Bras, which translates literally to “hat arm”, is a bicorne hat that is designed to be compressed and carried under the arm, formerly worn on dress occasions by men in the 18th Century. Worn by all line and staff officers of the army, this type chapeau was worn at a slight angle or 'sideways' atop the head.

These caps were intended as a Dress Hat, and not too many survived the ages due to their fragile nature. This example measures 17" x 9 1/2" when collapsed, and still retains the cockade, badge, bullion end tassels, and the white feather plume. The badge is the standard cast metal U.S. Federal Eagle under E PLURIBUS UNUM, with the silver wash well retained. These Caps were universal, with the only distinction being the branch of service button affixed to the cockade on the right side of the cap, which is a standard U.S. Army insignia. We believe that this hat is most likely for an infantry officer.

The interior is lined with white / tan silk with a leather sweatband, and there are no markings on the interior that we can see. The top of the lining is definitely degraded from years of being folded and unfolded.

A lovely, scarce example that comes more than ready for further research and display.
