Item Description
Original item: Only One Available. This is a very nice well-used early American commercial percussion musket, roughly about the same size as a Springfield Musket, and in the same .75" caliber. It is definitely not military issue, as it has no slings or provision for a bayonet, and is not made as substantially as a military issue.
The musket is mounted with a very nice lightly engraved percussion "trade" lock, marked on the side with:
W. JACOT
1834
Research indicates that William Jacot was a Gunsmith living in Liverpool, England during the early-mid 19th century, and we have located several other examples of his work. "Trade Locks" were a very easy way for gunsmiths in England to generate income, as the United States private firearms industry was still not well-developed. There also looks to be some type of touch mark on the barrel, as well as a faint number 16.
The musket is all brass mounted, with an engraved trigger guard and butt plate. It has a wooden ramrod, though we suspect that this is display replacement. The lock is functional, but sometimes will not fire correctly, and the trigger can get stuck in the rear position. It probably requires some adjustment of the tumbler and/or sear spring.
Condition overall is very nice, with a lovely worn patina. The stock does show wear, with past repairs around the wrist and lock areas. A very nice early American musket, ready to hang on the wall!
