Original Items: Only One Available. This is an excellent condition complete circa 1957-1959 U.S. Air Force size LARGE Gentex P-4A flight helmet that comes totally complete with internal receiver ear phones and pull down spring loaded tint visor. It even includes the OD Green Canvas Visor protector! Helmet features original paint and with USAF wings insignia to the right side. All parts are in very good condition, and it is named to COFFEY in several locations. This is a rare complete helmet, with no major deterioration issues.
Also included is a very nice TYPE MS-22001 Oxygen Mask, complete with original microphone wire intact, as well as the oxygen hose. This type was used with earlier helmets, so to adapt it to fit the P-4A, the original rigging was cut off, and an "INST. OXYGEN & HELMET RETENTION" harness was placed onto the mask. This allows it to properly clip into the side retainers on the Helmet. The mask is in great shape, and was made by MSA, or Mine Safety Appliances. It has some deterioration from age, but you can see where the harness has protected it.
This really is a great looking and complete set. Really has that great "fighter pilot" look to it. Ready to display!
The USAF P-4 flight helmet was standardized in 1955 as a continuation of P-3 with improved avionics in order to make helmet headset communications and oxygen mask dynamic microphone compatible with aircraft intercommunication set AN AIC-10. the new H-75/AIC headset system was added as well as a new earphone cushions spring mounted and tethered to short nylon strings which protruded through the lateral helmet walls to be secured over a rubber over a rubber lock-nut and snubber bar. The P-4 was used with A-13A/MS22001 A-14 oxygen mask. The P-4A standardized in 1957 has a new visor mechanism that replace the side latching design with a tracked visor securing system actuated by grasping a central rubber knob and pulling the visor down into position. The newly assembled P-4A helmets made use of the new fiberglass shell material that replaced the earlier phenolic resin and molded cotton duck material.
