Original Item: Only One Available. This is a lovely Civil War Federal sold shot iron cannonball, measuring approximately 4.5" in diameter. This would indicate that it is a 12lb. size, for the Federal 12-pounder smoothbore cannon. These were widely available after the Civil War, as the days of solid shot were pretty much over, and the government disposed of them on the surplus market. This example has a very worn tag of provenance noting where it was dug, but we can’t make out much:
NORTH
AR….
1960s
We aren’t sure what the second word is, but we could make out that it was ground dug in the 1960s.
Not Available for Export.
The cannon ball is heavily rusted, with the usual scaling and pitting scars seen on excavated ordnance. It's definitely a nice looking example, with a great patina!
A great piece of U.S. Civil War militaria, ready to display!
