Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This is a lovely Civil War Federal sold shot iron cannonball, measuring approximately 3.6" in diameter. This would indicate that it is a 6lb. size, for the Federal 6-pounder smoothbore, 3.67-inch caliber cannon. These were widely available after the Civil War, as the days of solid shot were pretty much over, and the government disposed of them on the surplus market. The dealer that this cannon ball was purchased from marked its name on the side:
BANNERMAN
CO.
NEW
YORK
The Bannerman Company was founded by Scottish Immigrant Francis Bannerman in 1865, when he was just 14 years old. The company, usually called simply "Bannerman's", was one of the largest surplus military dealers in history, and at times purchased entire navy ships to be sold at auction. Eventually the amount of munitions they had became so large that Bannerman made his own castle on the Hudson River, called Bannerman's Island Arsenal.
Cannonballs such as this were relatively simple compared to a lot of things sold, however they also served as advertisement, with the nicely hand-painted label on the side.
A great piece of U.S. militaria, ready to display!
