Original U.S. Civil War Army Officer's M1860 Dress Sword by Ames Mfg. Co. with Folding Guard and Scabbard

Item Description

Original Item: One of a Kind. Just received out of an old collection along with about 100 other swords! This is the standard Union Officer's Dress or Parade Sword Model 1860, issued during the Civil War. It has a very nice partially etched 29" blade with foliage designs, which is marked on the ricasso by the maker:

AMES
MFG. CO.
CHICOPEE
MASS.

Ames was one of the major manufacturers of Swords used before and Durign the Civil War. They made many swords in their factory, which was well-equipped to forge any type of edged weapon.

The edged design has U.S. on one side along with other military designs, and looks to have a name on the opposite side, which unfortunately is not legible due to wear. The sword measures 35 3/4" overall, and the hilt and "shell" Guard are of bronze/brass alloy and the grip is wire bound sharkskin. It also features a partial "fold-away" guard on one side, which would allow it to rest more comfortably on the left hip. It comes in its original decorated brass mounted steel scabbard, which has lost its original blued finish. Scabbard is straight, with no real dents that we can see.

Condition is, as shown, definitely in "attic find" condition, with lots of original patina. The gilding on the hilt wore away or evaporated long ago, and now is a nice dark color. The sharkskin grip is mostly intact, but has shrunken a bit, though it still has its brass wrapping. The spring loaded catch for the foldaway guard is also frozen, so it will not lock in place. The scabbard is in similar condition.

Just out of the attic but read to restore or display as is!
