Original Item: Only One Available. Now this is one of the most attractive looking Civil War kepis you have seen in awhile. This red kepi was once worn by an Officer of either an Artillery Regiment or the famed Zouave Regiment due to them being identical. The cap does show age and wear, but this is one of the most solid examples we have seen in quite some time.

This is an absolutely stunning example of a Civil War Union Officer’s Kepi dating from the later portion of the American Civil War, Circa 1862-1863. This is the classic officer’s kepi which features French Style Officer’s Braid, which was popular with both Union and Confederate officer’s during the war. Generally, there is virtually no difference between Regular Union Artillery and Zouave caps of this style, the dark red with black band was common amongst both sides, even the use of the Federal Eagle buttons was common. To err on the side of caution, we are offering this cap as a Federal Artillery officer’s cap. Perhaps further research can yield otherwise.

The cap is made of medium red wool, with the braid made of fine gold bullion. The visor of the cap is of painted lacquered leather, without a reinforcement edging. The Leather chinstrap matches the visor, and is secured in place by two buttons featuring a federal eagle with a shield bearing a letter in the center. The interior of the cap is lined with light cotton, with a sweatband made of thin Moroccan leather with a cross hatch pattern that has tearing present.

This is an absolutely beautiful cap, that is fresh from a large military show. It is a solid piece, and is offered in “as found” untouched condition. Showing only the usual signs of age and honest wear, this cap was most certainly looked after and taken care of for the last 160 years!
