Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. The British .75 bore P-1842 was the last step in the evolution of the Brown Bess Musket, having replaced the obsolete Flintlock with a Percussion lock. It was based in large on the earlier designs used by the East India Company, who had for years been ahead of the British Military in their use of new firearms innovations. There were several different bayonet designs for the P-1842, made to combat issues with the Hanovarian and other Catch systems, which did not effectively secure the bayonet.
Eventually the "Lovell's Pattern" bayonet was made, which used an under barrel catch that engaged when a the bayonet was rotated. However even this was a compromise, and during discussions, even the Duke of Wellington got involved and suggested the addition of a socket ring, not previously adopted by Britain. After the introduction of the P-1853 Rifled Musket, which did have a muzzle ring, many now obsolete P-1842 muskets were equipped with similar bayonets.
When the U.S. Civil War broke out, as with many European countries, the private firearms industry in Britain was involved in supplying weapons to the States. This was most often the Confederacy, who did not have the industrial capacity of the North, and were always in need of usable weapons.
Often, weapons sent were "Scrubbed" of any original markings, so as to avoid any unwanted attention, and then were marked by the importing company, such as this bayonet, which is marked on the blade with:
IMPORTED BY ROBINSON, ADAM & CO. RICHMOND
This company is a known importer for the Confederacy before and during the Civil War. The bayonet is in good condition, and would have been sent along with P-1842 .75 Percussion Muskets. The locking ring is functional, and it would make a great part of any U.S. Civil war collection.
