Original U.S. Civil War / Early Indian Wars Private Purchase Chasseur Style Pattern Kepi With Pre - Civil War Infantry “I” Side Buttons

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a fine example of a Civil War and early Indian Wars chasseur-style kepi in good condition. As issued to both enlisted men and officer’s during this period. The no longer retains manufacturer information on the interior lining.

This Federal Chasseur Pattern Kepi features fabric of very fine blue wool broadcloth. The crown stands nearly 2 ⅝” high at the front, 4 ¼” at the rear seam and the top is 5 ¼” in diameter, stiffened with a pasteboard beneath the lining. The body of the cap meets a band of wool seamed only at the rear and stiffened with leather. The cap's interior is not lined with the often seen black polished cotton, but instead has a very fine “skull cap” still fully attached. The leather sweatband is 1 1/8" wide. The flat visor is original to the hat, and composed of painted leather and is unfortunately mostly detached from the kepi and is held on by the corners. The leather chinstrap is secured on the side with two Pre 1860 Brass Federal Eagle Buttons with an “I” in the center of the shields for infantry.

This fantastic example comes more than ready for further research and display!
