Item Description
Original Item: Only one Available. This is an AUSTRIAN AUGUSTIN MODEL 1842 Percussion Musket, originally issued in tube lock, but converted to percussion in the 1850s. Many European powers were beginning to move to cartridge firearms, and with a huge market in the United States, sold off many of their soon to be obsolete firearms. Some of these reached the Northern Union forces, but more often, they were sent to the South, which did not have nearly the same level of industrial capacity.
The musket measures just shy of 58" in overall length, the .71 caliber barrel measuring 42". The wood stock is quality walnut and the mounts are all iron. The Augustin M-1842 Musket was the standard Austrian rifle until being replaced by the Lorenz Rifled musket in 1855. This example was unfortunately scrubbed of all its markings before export, so that the country of origin could not be traced. There are still markings on the lock indicating that it did have a frizzen, which was adapted as part of the "tube lock" system originally used on this musket.
It still retains the original cleaning rod, though both the lower and upper sling swivels are missing. Overall, the musket does show quite a bit of wear, and the wood is mostly dark, with the metalwork faded to an oxidized patina. There is wear to the stock, and some cracking near the lock screws, though it still is stable. The lock functions correctly, holding at half cock and firing at full.
A very nice example of one of the typical imported long arms during the civil war. Ready to display!
