Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This is an AUSTRIAN MODEL 1842 Percussion Saddle ring Cavalry Carbine and subsequently sold to the United States and imported just prior to the U.S. Civil War where many of these weapons saw service mostly on the Confederate side. Carbine is complete with original period ramrod. These were installed by Union and Confederate soldiers or armorers, as the carbine’s ramrod was originally carried separately on the soldier’s belt in Europe.
The Carbine measures just shy of 30" in overall length, the .71caliber rifled barrel measuring just 14 1/2". The wood stock is quality walnut and the mounts are all iron. The long lock plate has a cutout for a flintlock pan, indicating this was originally manufactured as a flintlock. The later models did not have this cutout. The top of the barrel is marked by maker ELISE DOJACK, and the left side of the barrel is marked 51 853. We do not know if this is a serial number, or the date it was made and then converted. Austrian rifles often omitted the first numeral of Western dates. There are various other markings, including a W.L. scratched into the stock, making this a great research opportunity.
The elongated left side plate incorporates a large bar with two connected saddle rings. These would be attached to a body sling to allow the carbine to hang down the trooper's right side. This would then play the part of the left hand should the rider need to discharge the weapon from his right shoulder, giving the requires tension to provide an accurate shot while the left hand steers the horse.
Found in an attic with years of neglect this Carbine has now just been cleaned and oiled to this marvelous display condition. Ready to display!
