Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. The colt "Pocket Percussion" Model 1849 revolvers in .31cal are essentially scaled down versions of the larger Navy Model 1851 in .36cal, and were developed concurrently. The serial Number 21504 can be found on the barrel, frame, trigger guard and grip frame. The loading rammer, cylinder axis pin, and barrel wedge all have a shortened number, while the serial number on the cylinder was removed. This most likely means that a later cylinder was swapped in.
The serial number indicates indicates the year of manufacture as 1852, well before the U.S. Civil War. It may have seen service during that conflict, however the condition of the revolver leads us to conclude that it did not see much service at all during its life.
Six shot percussion, .31 caliber with a long 5" barrel, in nice tight condition with nice aged finish on the steel, and much of the original nickel plating on the brass components. This is something we rarely see, and there is also most of the original cylinder "Stagecoach Holdup Scene" engraving visible, along with a clear COLT'S PATENT. Appears to be in perfect functioning condition and shows only light wear.
The Colt early two line address is still well marked in a line across the top of the octagonal barrel -
ADDRESS.COL. SAML COLT
NEW YORK CITY
The walnut grips are in very good shape, with a lovely color and the expected patina of age. They still have most of the original "Piano Varnish" finish that was applied to these at the factory. The revolver is tight with firm lock-up and the action functions correctly. However, as with any gun this age, it can be finicky. If the hammer is pulled back very quickly, the cylinder can over rotate. The bore shows clear lands and grooves, with a mostly bright finish.
This is a very nice '49 Pocket dating from the Civil War and is as tight as a drum; a wonderful acquisition for any collection.
