Original U.S. Civil War Field Gear Grouping Named to Pvt. Layette L. Humphrey 9th NY Heavy Artillery

Item Description

Original Items: One of a Kind Set. This is a fantastic named U.S. Civil War Field Gear Grouping, something that we very rarely see! This set belonged to Union Army Soldier Private Layette L. Humphrey, who was with the 9th New York Heavy Artillery. Records show that this regiment was mustered In Auburn, New York in 1861. The regiment was involved in the Defense Of Washington D.C. from 1862-1864. It also was at the Battle of Cold Harbor in 1864, the Shenandoah Valley Campaigns of 1864, and at the Appomattox Campaigns of 1865 that lead to the surrender of Confederate General Robert E. Lee.

This lovely set consists of the following:

- An Original U.S. Civil War Federal 1839 Pattern Belt with standard oval brass belt plate. The belt measures 36 inches overall with the plate, and is marked L.L. Humphrey on the back. Condition is good, with the leather having deteriorated over the past 160 years. It is now somewhat dry rotted and delicate.

- An Original U.S. Civil War Springfield Rifled Musket Socket Bayonet marked U.S. in a deteriorated scabbard. Condition of the bayonet is very good, with a lovely patina and no major rust. The scabbard, like the belt, has deteriorated and is now missing components as shown.

- An Original Pattern 1861 pattern Federal issue leather cartridge box for .58 caliber Minié ball cartridges, complete with partial cross strap, U.S. front plate, and internal tins. The shoulder cross strap, like the belt, is marked L. L. Humphrey on the back, but also has a lovely small ivory shield marking plate installed, which is marked L L / H / 9, Humphrey's initials and the number of the regiment.

Condition is good, with the leather having deteriorated over the past 160 years. It is now somewhat dry rotted and delicate. The shoulder strap is broken off at both ends, and many of the fittings on the box are missing or damaged.

A great named Civil War set, perfect for any collection! Civil war items like this are extremely rare, as many were used long after the war until they were simply thrown away. Ready to display!
