Original Item: Only One Available. A TRUE & RARE RELIC of the Irish-American involvement During the American Civil War!
This example of a “Hardpack” type knapsack is paint-stenciled with the regimental number 69 (5”) located on the center outer flap and F over 60 on the bottom edge. This knapsack is attributed to the famous New York, “Irish-American” militia regiment raised in N.Y. city during the mid 1850’s.and went on to achieved world famous success throughout the American Civil War. The pack shown here is of a type commonly worn by other New York militia units from the 1850’s up through the early war period, then being replaced by the U.S. model 1853-1855 “Soft type”knapsack used by 90% of the Union army for the rest of the War.
The knapsack is constructed of a painted linen fabric laid over and attached to an inner wooden box frame. The front flap is composed of leather that has been applied with an enamel-patented paint and then is lined with a fine linen cloth on the inner face. Beneath the flap, covering the opening of the box area are two painted fabric flaps with cloth tape ties (three remaining of the original four) The leather outer flap originally had a binded edging running down both sides and across the bottom, but unfortunately is now missing. The three Blanket straps originally located on the top of the pack are missing as well. On the bottom side, the shoulder strap “Roller Buckle” and Brass “J” type hook are also missing. The reverse side of the pack has no straps remaining. Overall condition is somewhat fragile and the painted surfaces are cracked and crazed. The pack’s measurements are as follows: 13-3/4” in height x 15” width and 4” in depth.
