Original Item: Only One Available. Just received out of an old collection along with other swords! This is an absolutely original Model 1850 Staff and Field Officer's Sword with half basket brass hilt decorated with pierced floral decorations, and a French imported blade.
The slightly curved blade of 29 1/2 inches is in borderline relic condition. There is the usual French arsenal marking on the spine but the extensive pitting has made it extremely difficult to read. The ricasso has the standard “Crowned B” proof marks. The blade appears as if there was some level of restoration done to it but was never completed. There is extensive pitting present on both the spine and the ricasso.
The grip is one of the more beautiful variants that we have encountered. It is not wood wrapped with leather but instead what appears to be some sort of shell or horn. The material is retained quite well but there is chipping and cracking present. The grooves of the handle still retains the rows of tightly twisted brass wiring.
The hilt is of brass, and unfortunately has sustained some bending to the guard and cross guard. It is however a lovely dark color, only achieved from decades of storage. The included scabbard does appear to be original to the sword with the same level of condition. There is no finish or the likes present and the body itself has a light surface rust.
Clearly a Sword that was especially ordered for a serving Officer in the Civil War, in relic condition, ready to restore or display as is!
The Model 1850 Army Staff and Field Officer's Sword was carried by all members of staff departments, Field Grade officers of Artillery and Infantry, Company Grade Officers of Light Artillery, Staff Officers and Aides-de-Camp between 1850 and 1872. It was based on a French pattern. Though other swords were by regulation allowed, this model was by far the most popular sword carried by officers during the American Civil War. The Staff and Field Officers' Sword is distinct from the Model 1850 Army Foot Officer's Sword.
