Original U.S. Civil War Model 1850 Army Staff and Field Officer Sword with German Blade by W. Clauberg & Iron Scabbard

Regular price $1,095.00

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is an absolutely original Model 1850 Staff and Field Officer's Sword with half basket brass hilt decorated with pierced floral decorations and U.S. molded into the guard. The sword's pommel is similarly decorated. The grip is leather bound with twisted brass wire to secure the grip. The slightly curved blade of 32" is in very worn shape, with some lovely etching in the middle, with U.S. on one side, and the Federal Eagle over E. Pluribus Unum on the otherside. The etching is extremely faint on the oxidized and peppered blade.

The blade on this example is German, and is very faintly marked with a Knight's Helmet (Ritter-helm) for the Solingen firm of "C.R. Kirschbaum, Metallwarenfabrik”. This company would later become W.R. Kirschbaum (his son) in 1870, which would later merge with Gebrüder Weyersberg to form the legendary Weyersberg Kirschbaum & Co. in 1883.

The iron scabbard has brass mounts to top, center and bottom. The body is solid, though there is very little black paint retained. There is some material missing on the chape and a screw appears to be missing at the throat. The areas that are no longer covered in paint has a light surface rust coating that does appear to be able to be cleaned away if you would wish to do so.

Totally honest, out of the attic after well over 100 years of storage is ready to display!

The Model 1850 Army Staff and Field Officer's Sword was carried by all members of staff departments, Field Grade officers of Artillery and Infantry, Company Grade Officers of Light Artillery, Staff Officers and Aides-de-Camp between 1850 and 1872. It was based on a French pattern. Though other swords were by regulation allowed, this model was by far the most popular sword carried by officers during the American Civil War. The Staff and Field Officers' Sword is distinct from the Model 1850 Army Foot Officer's Sword.
