Item Description
Original Items: Only Ones Available.Incredible condition Model 1855 Socket Bayonet with matching early issue Model 1855 Bayonet Scabbard. We would rate these as “unissued” condition, as they are in astounding condition for being over 150 years old!
The Model 1855 bayonet was used on the .58 Caliber Model 1855 Springfield, 1861 Springfield, 1863 Springfield and so forth. The example offered is in very high condition, with original bright polished finish, showing only light signs of original honest storage/handling wear that has accumulated over the last century and a half.
The matching early issue Model 1855 scabbard is also in amazing condition for its age. The leather is excellent condition for an article of leather of this age. The stitching is strong and completely intact, and the brass finial is tight and securely in place. The early issue sewn belt loop version of the Model 1855 Scabbard was replaced with a riveted simplified version around 1862-1863. Sewn loop varieties are hard to come by as it is, let alone one in unissued condition!
The Scabbard has confederate markings added which we are not confident in their originality. Quite possibly, they were added much later. We cannot confirm their authenticity, so we will leave that up to the potential purchaser. Regardless, the scabbard itself is a phenomenal example of this scarce early war scabbard!
A fine set to complete a high condition Springfield Rifle-Musket!
