Original U.S. Civil War Model 1861 Cartridge Box with Original Tin Inserts and Box Plate

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is an interesting Federal Issue Cartridge Box which has certainly seen some service during the American Civil War! This is a genuine Federal Issue leather Pattern 1855 .58 Caliber Cartridge Box.

Of particular interest, the Box is carved with initials from two different soldiers, indicating that this cartridge box was likely battlefield salvage at one time and then reissued. The Initials “D t” appear under the box plate, and the initials “S.F.” appears carved inside the outer flap on the interior. Another interesting feature, the original Cartridge Box Tins are not only intact, but also matching. The box plate is still secured to the outer flap of the cartridge box by the means of the original leather thong. Unfortunately, we could not find any maker stamps, which likely have become obfuscated over the years.

The Outer flap has light surface wear and is missing its original closure latch tab.
Both Cartridge box strap buckles are intact. Interior flap is intact with side ears of the flap both intact. Tool pouch is intact with flap and closure tab. Leather shows signs of obvious age, flaking, and shrinkage (from being store in a hot attic for decades). The bottom of the box has both roller buckles and brass final intact. Reverse of the box has both belt loops.

This is an excellent example of a classic piece of Civil War field equipment. Perfect for a collector looking to simply have a representative example, or an advanced collector!
