Original Items: One-of-a-kind set. John Grant served in the Union Army during the U.S. Civil War. According to the documentation he began his military career with the 97th New York Volunteer Infantry as a Private in March 1862, then later he transferred to the 83rd New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment which later became the Ninth Infantry National Guard. He is recorded as a Veteran of the 9th and attended a reunion in 1908. Included in this fascinating group are the following items:
- Original U.S. Civil War Sixth Plate Tintype of John Grant in Federal Uniform as the rank of Sergeant according to the chevrons on his sleeves.
- Original discharge from the 97th New York Volunteer Infantry dated August 1864.
- Furlough approval document for the 83rd New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment dated December 1863.
- Letter from Grant to his brother dated November 17th, 1864.

The 97th New York Infantry was organized at Boonville, New York and mustered in for three years service on February 18, 1862 under the command of Colonel Charles Wheelock.
