Original U.S. Civil War Navy Model 1852 Officer's Dress Sword with Original Leather Scabbard

Item Description

Original Item: Only one available. This is a real beauty! It is a very nice U.S. Navy Model 1852 Dress sword, fitted with a very nice 26 ½” long unornamented blade. It has a broad fuller running most of the blade length, with a smaller fuller near the spine, much like an M1860 Cavalry Saber. No maker marks can be found at the ricasso. The sword measures 32 1/4” inches overall, and is contained in a fine leather scabbard that is brass mounted, with knotted rope base fittings for the suspension rings, which are both present. There is also an entire sea serpent wrapped around the bottom mount, the drag.

The sword's hand guard is elaborately molded again with a sea serpent as part of the bow. The grip is wrapped shark skin and is brass wire bound. Both the sharkskin wrap and brass are in excellent condition for their age. . The part basket is embossed with Oak leaves and acorns and displays the letters U.S.N.. The pommel shows an eagle surrounded by 13 Stars. All the brass mounts were originally gold washed or plated and much is still evident after maybe 160/170 years.

In very nice condition this started life as an exceptional Naval Officer's Sword. Ready to display!
