The sword has a lovely and deeply etched blade bearing various patriotic motifs as well as floral designs. This is one of the most attractive engraved blades we have seen in quite some time.
This example is a British Pattern 1822 cavalry officer’s saber believed to be manufactured by a German based firm, imported and sold by the Horstmann Company of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania during the Civil War.
The cavalry saber has a two branch steel hilt with single line tooling on the branches. Blade has a slightly curved steel blade that measures approximately 35 1/2” long, a width of 1 ⅛” and a 25 ½” long stopped fuller. The mark of the retailer on the ricasso reads as “W. HORSTMANN / & SONs / PHILADELPHIA”. The mottled, dark gray blade has moderate wear with profuse floral/patriotic etching on the blade sides. Letters “U.S.” found on the obverse side and a federal eagle is on the reverse. Spine of the blade is stamped “Iron Proof”.
Grips are in good condition and is made up of a grooved wooden handle covered with dark brown leather with a single wire wrap in the grooves. Leather wrap has a number of spots that exhibits scuffing and wear. A steel top strap runs from the ferrule to the pommel. Steel scabbard has been cleaned to a dull light gray with areas of light rust. Scabbard is mostly straight with just a few areas of minor denting.
