Item Description
Original Item: One of a Kind. This is an especially nice Officer's sword with a "Quill-back" engraved blade, marked to have been made by W. CLAUBERG in SOLINGEN, Germany. The blade was then shipped to the U.S. and retailed by J.P.FITCH, NEW YORK. It was common during the time for retailers to order blades from Europe, especially France and Germany, as the American blade-making industry was not quite at the same level for high-end presentation grade blades.
The etched high-quality nickel-plated blade is marked U.S. and also bears images of Union Soldiers on either side. The blade is in very good condition, with lots of the original plating, and is very attractive. The Single bar guard simulates a twisted rope rising to a magnificent EAGLE HEAD POMMEL. The entire hilt metal work is Silver plated and there is some wear to the inside of the cross guard. The grip is Ray skin bound with twisted silver wire.
The sword comes with it's original all steel scabbard with silver plated mounts. The Scabbard is engraved on the inner side near the top :-
BR. GEN'L J.H.HAMMOND
1864.
Brigadier General Hammond, from Manhattan, New York City had a very interesting military career, entering the U.S. Union Army as a PRIVATE and ending up as a GENERAL. There is plenty to read about him on the Internet including his being the Aide-De-Camp to General William Tecumseh Sherman during the VICKSBURG CAMPAIGN.
A fine sword with plenty of research potential!
