Original Set. Only One Available. This is a very nice set of Civil War Federal officer shoulder boards for the rank of Captain, indicated by the double bars at each end. The color inside the border is blue, the color indicating Infantry during the Civil War era and later. It is hand embroidered, made from wool fabric and bullion thread surrounding a stiff cheesecloth core. The boards measure 3 x 1⅛”.
The boards are in rough shape with one board missing one of the captain’s bars on one end as well as missing most of the underside, and the other example’s bullion border is coming undone. Being so terribly old, these are lucky to be in the shape they are.
Despite the damage, this pair still presents beautifully, with a lovely patina. A very nice upmarket set that would be home in any Civil War insignia collection.
