Original U.S. Civil War Rare Model 1860 Naval Cutlass by Ames Mfg. Co. - Dated 1862

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a nice example of the rarely seen U.S. Naval Cutlass, as used from 1860-1865. The boarding cutlass was derived from the French pattern of 1833, often referred to as a “cuillere a pot,” or more commonly called the “soup ladle” weapon. It features all brass mounts, a wood with leather wrapped sword grip, and a nice blade. The leather of the grip is mostly intact, and in good shape with a nice coating but does chipping present. These were NEVER bound in brass wire even though there are grooves. This example was bound with brass wire, indicating that this was more than likely kept in service as a sidearm on land. Unfortunately the brass bounding is very loose and nearly all “unwrapped” from the grooves

The curved 26 inch blade's ricasso is marked on one side with the banner style address, which is very faded and no longer completely legible. However we do know that “D.R.” was an inspector for the Ames company.

On the other side it is marked-

U.S.N.
D.R.
1862

The blade is in good shape, however it has definitely been cleaned but still stained in spots and displays a lovely patina. There is an additional inspector D.R. mark on the pommel, indicating inspection by Daniel Reynolds, one of many inspectors working at Ames during the U.S. Civil War. The underside of the guard is marked with rack number 21 M / 887. The guard as a whole looks like it may have at one time been lacquered to improve the appearance, however most has worn off.

Offered in very nice collector's condition, original Civil War Naval Cutlasses are getting harder and harder to find every year! Ready to display!
