Original U.S. Early Civil War Cavalry Carbine Cartridge Box, Complete with Wooden Block Insert

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. Original Federal Issue Carbine Cartridge Box in excellent condition of circa 1861-1862 vintage. This box is a nice example of an early manufactured “universal” style of carbine box that became standard. It came with a removable wood block that could be changed to fit a variety of different cartridges. The box has the typical early war style of attaching the latch tab by the means of a row of stitching, and is fitted with a horizontal belt loop and bottom buckles for use on a shoulder sling that was rarely employed.

This box has a large, and incredibly clear, makers mark which reads:

MANUFACTURED
BY
J.E.CONDICT
57. WHITE ST
NEW YORK

This is a nice example of a Civil War Carbine Cartridge Box that has retained great color and finish. The interior wood block is bored out for twenty carbine cartridges. (Spencer rounds fit perfectly.) The cover shows some minute crazing from flexing and the reverse some handling marks. There is some flaking to the outer finish of the leather. The tabs and inner flap show a deep luster.. The securing strap is unbroken, as well as the tool pouch strap. The bottom buckles were removed long ago, most likely by the cavalryman who carried this box. The belt loops on the reverse show an old period repair (rivet) to each which appears period.

Overall, an excellent example of a Federal Issue Carbine Cartridge Box, perfect for the Civil War Collector!
