Item Description
Original Item: One of a Kind. This came out of an old home in Massachusetts and the painting itself measures 17" X 25", while the wood frame measures 27" X 34 1/2". There is a brass plaques attached to the frame stating:-
U.S. FRIGATE ESSEX 32 GUNS
LAUNCHED 1790
BY
JOSEPH HOWARD 1789-1857
The painting itself has not been out of the frame during its short time with us and appears unsigned. There is slight water damage to the matte on the left hand side but the painting remains untouched.
There is plenty of information on the U.S.S. ESSEX to be found on the Internet, including its involvement in the Mediterranean Barbary Pirate wars. She also saw extensive service in the War of 1812, before being captured by the British, and was then renamed the H.M.S. Essex. The frigate was built in SALEM, Mass. in 1799 and was the largest vessel ever to be built in Salem.
We understand the OIL version by this artist hangs in the collection of the U.S. NAVAL ACADEMY. A most romantic part of U.S. Naval history and very attractive, ready to display!
