Item Description
Original Items: Only One Set Available. This is a very nice collection of helmets from various time periods and countries. All helmets are complete with liners and are offered in great condition. This is a wonderful lot to pick up if you are looking to either start collecting helmets or are just wanting to add these really nice examples to your already existing ones.
The following five helmets are included in this lot:
- Vietnam Era M1 Helmet With Cover: Vietnam War era M-1 helmet shells have a set of swivel (movable) chinstrap loops called bales and a manganese steel rim. These rims had non-magnetic qualities that reduced the chance of error readings when placed around certain sensitive equipment (such as a compass). In WWII the shells had Stainless Steel rims, however these would easily lose paint, and the shine produced without paint was a liability.
This helmet is a fine example and still retains most of its original Vietnam War parts, and the shell has the original dark OD Green finish. It is fitted with a very nice USMC reversible camouflage cover, and some lovely accessories to complete the look, held in place by the elastic band that retains the cover.
The helmet's heat lot code of I 9074 is clearly visible inside the shell, which indicates manufacture by Ingersoll Rand Products, who produced a total of 3,174,296 helmet shells between 1965-1968 during the Vietnam Period. The helmet still has the original OD Green chin strap, with the correct modified buckle implemented during the Korean war and used until M1 helmet production stopped.
- U.S. Rear Seam Swivel Bale M1 Helmet by Schleuter: This is a very nice service worn M1 helmet with Vietnam war era helmet liner. The helmet is netted with an early helmet band without cateyes. Aside from the markings, there are some subtle differences between a McCord and Schlueter M-1 helmet shell. This can be found on the rims. A Schlueter helmet shell has a much straighter profile than the classic McCord brim. Also the weld marks for the fixed bales and rim are small and round on a Schlueter, while they are oval and wide for a McCord.
- Swedish M37: Swedish steel pot comes with a leather headband, built in liner and adjustable chinstrap. These helmets are from the 1930's and were refurbished in the 1960's & 1970's and were then used all the way through the 1990's. Helmet is an unissued Swedish surplus helmet and a must for any helmet collection.
- French Modèle 51 Tanker Helmet: The 1st French post war tank helmet was introduced in 1951. This leather helmet was unique in that it could be used in conjunction with the M51 OTAN steel helmet. The helmet is classified as a radio tank helmet, updated in 1958 and again in 1965, first with plastic shell replacing the leather variety and then with attached radio equipment built in.
- Israeli Defense Force (OR-201) M76 Kevlar: Exported by Sherwood International Export Corporation, an alleged CIA front company which shut down after Iran Contra. This early model was only made a few years, then updated. Early ones were forwarded through Sherwood supposedly to be tested by LAPD, but were then forwarded to South American Operations. The OR-201, also designated Kasda OR-201 Model 76 or M-76 for short, is a combat helmet of Israeli origin. Developed in the 1970s, the OR-201 was one of the world's first ballistic helmets. It was subsequently exported on a large scale and has been used by many militaries worldwide.
