Item Description
Original Item: One of a Kind. This is a lovely example of a typical Flintlock Fur Trade musket, most likely sold by the well-known Hudson Bay Company. During the 18th and early 19th centuries, the fur trade was big business in North America, as the large areas of wilderness will still mostly untouched. Getting high quality fur was much easier, and many colonists and Native Americans engaged in trapping and hunting for the trade.
The musket has a very traditional design, using very large iron Trigger Guard so Native American trappers could shoot while wearing mittens in the severe cold. This example was made / assembled in Birmingham, England and stamped by the maker on the right butt stock:
CHAS. H. COOPER
MAKER
BIRMINGHAM
The left facet of the barrel has the standard Birmingham proof marks in use after 1813, the CROWN / CROSSED SCEPTERS / P proof mark and CROWN / CROSSED SCEPTERS/ V "viewed" mark. Between these is the number 30, often seen on Birmingham made barrels. The lock is marked with an ELEPHANT carrying a CASTLE on its back. This is the mark of lock makers based in the South London area known as THE ELEPHANT & CASTLE, which is also the birth place of CHARLIE CHAPLIN. There is also C.H.C. under the flash pan for Charles H. Cooper, and WARRANTED across the tail.
Condition is very good, and shows a lovely matured oxidized patina over the metalwork, with just a bit of peppering. sliding out the ramrod shows that it is still bright in areas covered by the ramrod pipes. The stock is solid, with a few cracks and repairs near the cross pins on the fore stock. The lock is functional, but the tumbler is a bit worn, so it will fire at both half and full cock.
This is a true Classic Hudson's Bay Company Flintlock Trade Musket, ready to display!
