Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. Black Fur felt has single rows of bound brim stitching indicating a later specimen. This black felt hat became symbolic of the Army on the western frontier and today is one of the most highly prized pieces of military headgear. It has a brim measuring approx 2.5 inches wide. The crown measures approx 5″ high. This hat comes complete with a crossed swords Cavalry insignia with letter B below.

Interior has a leather sweatband embossed in gold leaf:

P. Herst of Philadelphia was a known hatter or contractor of hats for the U.S. Army from the 1870's into the turn of the 20th century.

Remains of original paper size label still present. Original hatband is missing and two pinwheel vents were added to it at some point, and while they could be period, they are not original to the heat. Condition overall is very good with some minor staining and signs of age. An incredibly rare hard to find hat from the Western Frontier!
