Original U.S. Indian Wars Era Enlisted Model 1885 Artillery Tunic with Gunner Rates

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. The Model 1885 Enlisted Infantry Full Dress Coat is a beautiful garment made of high-quality dark blue wool. The coat features eight buttons sewn in a single column, with none of them missing. The buttons are stamped on the back with "SCOVILL MFG WATERBURY" and appear to be the correct enlisted buttons of the period between 1851 and 1880. The coat also features shoulder straps, collar, and tail flaps made of red wool, with red piping running along the front of the coat. The shoulder strap and tail flaps have smaller versions of the front buttons, three on the edges of each sleeve cuff. There are Gunner artillery rates on each sleeve taking the shape of an artillery shell, with great cross stitching.

The jacket is in excellent condition, with only minor signs of wear and tear. The coat has a great service-worn look to it, which adds to its charm and character. Although there is no extensive damage present, there is some minor fraying on the bottom skirt and cuffs, as well as some moth damage. The lining of the coat is stained but does not appear to be greatly damaged. There’s a great maker’s stamp for a New York Company, and the name of a soldier which is difficult to read, but this would make a great research project for someone!

Overall, this Model 1885 Enlisted Infantry Full Dress Coat is a rare and unique piece of history that would make a great addition to any collection of military memorabilia. The coat's exceptional quality, attention to detail, and excellent condition make it a valuable item that is sure to be cherished for years to come.
