Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. Much along the lines of the Frank Wesson "2 Trigger" single shot rifles is this fine rifle by the J. Stevens Arms Company. Founded by Joshua Stevens in 1864 in Chicopee, Massachusetts, the company an American firearms manufacturer that came out of the post Civil War economy. The company introduced the .22 Long Rifle round and made a number of rifle, shotgun, and target pistol designs. By 1902, they were advertising themselves as "the largest producers of sporting arms in the world".
The company continued until 1915, when it was purchased, and eventually became part of the Savage Arms Company, manufacturing many parts for WWII weapons, including the famed M1928A1 Thompson Machine Gun.
This rifle is relatively simple compared to some that they produced, and does not have a fore stock, much like the Wesson rifles. It features a globe front sight and adjustable rear aperture "peep" sight on a ladder. The action is definitely easier to work than the Wesson Design, and has a button on the left receiver to open the breech. This reveals serial number 4506 on the left side of the barrel, which is also stamped into the trigger guard. Above this is the manufacturer and patent markings:
J. STEVENS & CO. CHICOPEE FALLS. MASS. PAT. SEPT.6.1864
The action works correctly, with an intact ejector that presents when the breech is opened. The hammer holds correctly at half cock, and fires at full. Condition is quite good, with a lovely patina on the metal components, and a nice red glow to the butt stock. The bore is in good condition, showing clear lands and grooves, though there is fouling and oxidation in areas.
A very nice example, ready to add to your collectin!
