Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very good condition genuine Korean War Era U.S. Army M4 Carbine bayonet fighting knife with original M8A1 scabbard. This knife-style bayonet was based on the M3 fighting knife, and was introduced in 1944. This example is nicely marked U.S. M4 / CONETTA on the blade side of the cross guard. This was manufactured by Conetta Manufacturing Company of Stamford, Conn., who produced bayonets for the M14 and M16 rifles as well.
Very good condition blade with most of the original phosphate finish. There is some oxidation near the tip and edge, but there has been no post-arsenal sharpening that we can see. Blade shows minor in and out wear and finish loss from cleaning. There are also some small dents and nicks on the edge, and probably 1-2mm of the tip is missing. Grips are the Korean War era black phenolic type, and they are in excellent condition, with no cracks or chips, just a bit of wear. The end latch is intact, and fully functional.
Comes complete with a Korean War Era OD green scabbard marked U.S. M8A1 / PWH, offered in very good condition. This design features a a thermoplastic impregnated cotton fabric body, metal throat, and canvas frog and securing strap, with a metal tip on the bottom of the scabbard. It has the darker OD green frog, and greater space between the throat and frog. The PWH marking most likely indicates it was made at the "Pennsylvania Working Home" for the blind. WWII had left many servicemen with eye injuries, and at that time, there were no computers or other advanced devices for assisting the blind. To help them out, the government opened up factories where they would work, often making military support items. The scabbard is in good condition, with the expected service wear. The securing strap is still functional, and has brass fittings, typical of Korean war issue.
