Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. Just purchased at a military show, this is a very nice mid 19th Century U.S Percussion Hunting rifle, with a very large bore, almost .60"! It is heavily rifled with 7 grooves, and most likely intended for hunting larger game.
This example was actually made using a BRITISH TRADE back-action percussion lock mechanism marked ATKINSON / WARRANTED on the lock plate. This lock was made by Joseph Atkinson of Lancaster, Lancashire, England who worked at 145 St. Leonard's Gate between 1840 and 1869. This Imported Trade Percussion lock was then acquired by American Gunsmith very possibly in Pennsylvania around which he hand made this fine Pa. Long Rifle.
The rifle has a 31" half octagonal Barrel in a very large .59 Caliber, quite a bit larger than the .39" most percussion hunting rifles of the period were in. It is 48 1/4" in overall length and has a lovely brass trigger guard / grip and hook butt plate. The ramrod throat is also brass, while the nose cap and barrel wedge escutcheons are German silver. The barrel has a fixed rear right and a German Silver front sight.
As with many hunting rifles, this example is fitted with a "set trigger", where depressing the rear trigger first until it clicks and just touching the front trigger discharges the weapon, hopefully with great accuracy. Unfortunately, it is out of adjustment and non functional at present. However the lock still functions correctly, holding at half cock and firing at full.
Overall condition is very good, with a lovely stock, and a great aged patina on the metalwork. Close examination shows that it may have had a wrist crack at some point, but it was expertly repaired and the stock refinished. The rifle comes with a ramrod, but this looks to be a non functional replacement, though from some time ago.
Most attractive and ready to display!
