Original U.S. Lothrop's Patent of 1901 Dual Fog Horn in Chest made in Gloucester, Mass.

Item Description

Original Item: Only One available. This is enchanting, it was re-acquired from a Historical Society Museum up on Cape Cod. It was made in 1901 in Gloucester, Massachusetts and follows the LOTHROP PATENT OF 1901. This example, which is hardly ever encountered is/was fitted with Two internal Sets of bellows, both still in place, and TWO External Horns, now one removed. The closed case has a folding handle which when cranked from side to side powers up the bellows inside producing an awfully loud moaning type sound apparently to warn other ships in its vacinity to keep clear. Unfortunately the tubing connecting the bellows to the one remaining horn is no longer present, so the set is not currently functional. The case with horns measures approximately 21" x 18" x 13".

LLEWELLYN DAY LOTHROP was born in Appleton, Maine in May 1836 and in 1880 set up shop in DUNCAN STREET, GLOUCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS. His Patent for this FOG HORN was granted ion 1901. Its original wood Case retains the original signage stating LOTHROP'S PATENT FOG HORN. In addition the case lid bears a brass plaque to the center giving the L.D. LOTHROP information together with GLOUCESTER and the unit's Serial Number of 1498.

Only the ONE exterior horn remains but it is clearly evident that the second horn was purposely removed and it's holes plugged. In Museum storage for many many years, we offer this most interesting Maritime Fog Horn, needing a good clean, and then ready to display!
