Item Description
Original Item: One of a Kind. This is the official U.S. Army Officer's Sword, introduced in the early 1900's (M-1902). It has a four bar nickel plated hand guard, dark hardwood finger grooved grip, slim slightly curved fully etched and nickel-plated blade. The etched design has typical United States Military emblems, including the Federal Eagle, crossed cannons, flags, and so forth. There is a panel showing the name of the officer G. W. DAVIS and the ricasso on that side is marked G.W.D. over a 1916 date. The reverse ricasso is marked by retailer W.C ROWLAND / PHILA., which was the company that personalized the blade, and fit it to the scabbard and hilt. The blade itself is stamped GERMANY right where the crossguard meets the grip.
Germany had a very active edged weapon export industry, which really only was stopped by the first world war. Many outfitters had blades made under contract in Germany, which were imported in bulk, and then customized to the owner's wishes. The sword is 37 1/2 inches in overall length, with a 32 1/2 inch blade. Condition is very good, with almost all of the nickel plating intact, and comes complete with its matching Scabbard.
