Original U.S. Marine Corps Model 1887/89 White Spiked Sun Helmet by Horstmann dated 1899 - Size 7

Item Description

Original Item: One Only. Much like our European cousins in the 1880s, the U.S. Armed Forces started to adopted spiked pith helmets, usually in dark navy blue or white, with all brass mounts and occasionally plumes. These saw active service in the Spanish American War of 1898 especially in the tropical climate in Cuba.

This helmet dates to the early 1900s, and it really is quite striking. These were worn in the field in hot climates, and the white color helped reflect light, while the design allowed ventilation around the entire head. The top has a lovely mounted spike over the top vent. and the maker information is marked on the underside of the leather sweatband-

THE WM. HORSTMANN CO.
CONTRACT. MARCH 4th, 1899.
PHILADELPHIA

The Helmet plate displays the Iconic "Eagle, Globe, & Anchor" insignia of the United States Marine Corps on the front. Helmet plate is in very good condition, though it is secured with an incorrect nut, so it is loose on the helmet at present. We believe that this insignia may be a replica or was added to the hat later, however the staining on the hat shows that it has been installed for quite some time. The side cockades over the ears are of an Eagle on a Fouled Anchor, and there are internal loops for an additional chin strap, though this helmet has unfortunately no chin strap or scales of any kind.

The original leather sweatband is still present, but definitely dry and delicate. It has a number 7 sticker on the back, indicating the size. The helmet overall shows use and staining, with the pith material soft in places. Helmets such as these were often doused in water to aid in cooling when the weather was hot.

Very nice, extremely rare and in great condition for its age, ready to display!
