Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. To some this is one of the most beautiful Revolvers ever made. Wonderful design, great workmanship and so easy on the eye. Merwin, Hulbert, & Co. or Merwin & Hulbert was an American firearms designer and marketer based in New York City which produced revolvers and rifles from 1874 through 1916. The firearms were manufactured by a subsidiary company, Hopkins & Allen of Norwich, Connecticut.
Their famous line of revolvers began with the "Frontier Model" Open Frame cartridge revolver, which took the proprietary .44 Merwin & Hulbert cartridge. This was known as the "1st Model", and was followed in 1878 by the "2nd Model", which made some improvements, but more importantly introduced a version that took the very popular Winchester .44-40 centerfire cartridge, which quickly became the most popular calibre. The Frontier model was then joined in 1880 by the Pocket Army model, which was based off of the 2nd model Frontier, so the first model available is called the "2nd Model".
This fine example is marked on the side of the frame with the model designation:
MERWIN, HULBERT &CO. N.Y.
POCKET ARMY
It comes with the the shorter 3 1/2 inch barrel (7 inches was the other option), which has the manufacturer and patent information:
HOPKINS & ALLEN MFG.CO. NORWICH CONN. U.S.A. PAT JAN.24
APR.21 DEC.15. 74 AUG.3.75 JULY11.76 APR.17.77 PAT'S MAR.6.77
As these were manufactured in several different calibers, the cartridge type would be indicated on the right side of the frame. This revolver is in .44-40 Winchester, indicated by:
CALIBRE
WINCHESTER 1873
This example retains probably 80% of it's Nickel plating and is fitted with what is called a Skull Crusher grip frame, with perfect bird's head checkered gutta percha (hard rubber) grip panels. The very low serial number 96, is shown on the rear of the barrel assembly, under the grips, and on the rear of the cylinder. The revolver cycles well, though it is sometimes finicky, as any revolver of this age would be. The bore is clean, with nice rifling, though there definitely is some wear. The Barrel twists to the side and slides out for cylinder acess.
Single action, only it was hoped to be accepted by the U.S. Government however by this date Colt had most all of the Government Contracts in its pocket. There was stiff competition from Remington, Smith & Wesson and Forehand & Wadsworth, however Mervin and Hulbert did succeed in getting some Police Contracts.
With an ingenious reloading system it became a favorite with many individuals and even more so with Collectors of today. Jesse James himself owned a 44 caliber Merwin Hulbert Pocket Army Revolver made by Hopkins & Allen.
Mervin died in 1888, whereupon the Company became Hulbert Bros Co. but was liquidated in 1896. Our example only having a 3 1/2" original barrel was an ideal Gun Fighter Revolver and does come in its old leather holster and associated Gun Belt stamped with a Maker's Name of:- "CHACE, FALL RIVER, MASS"
A lovely and rare large Single Action U.S. Revolver, ready to display!
