Original Item: Only One Available. An excellent example of the Model 1839 Socket Bayonet Scabbard paired with a U.S. Model 1816 Socket Bayonet. The Model 1839 is noteworthy in that it was the very first U.S. Army Model Bayonet Scabbard that was intended to be worn on a waistbelt. Previously bayonets were carried in a shoulder mounted bayonet carriage, as what was used during the American Revolution and the War of 1812.
The Model 1839 Bayonet Scabbard featured a sheath made of blacked bridle leather, fitted with an angular piece of looped white buff leather that acted as the belt loop. The Scabbard was fitted with a brass finial fitted with a tulip-shaped point. This model was standard, up until the adoption of the Model 1855 Scabbard, which omitted the Buff belt loop, replacing it with more readily available bridle leather. The Model 1839, however, was used up to and during the Civil War, until the remaining stocks were extinguished. The specimen offered is in good condition for its age. The leather is dry overall, with crazing and cracking in areas. The stitching however remains strong, and the brass final is securely in place. Considering the rarity, and how few survived, this example is a true rarity!
The bayonet is a standard Model 1816 Socket Bayonet with a “U.S”. marking, and inspector stamp “F.A.” stamped on the base of the blade. Metal exhibits patina, and some oxidation and light corrosion as expected. The bayonet would clean up if one so desired, but we are offering it in “as found” condition. As it sits, both scabbard and bayonet match age and condition quite beautifully.
A very rare and sought after set of an early piece of U.S. standardized equipment which rarely survived the Mexican War and Civil War. These are very hard to come by on today’s market.
