Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. In 1816 the Federal Government ordered 20,000 Flintlock Pistols designated the Model of 1816 from SIMEON NORTH, a Gun Manufacturer in Middletown, Connecticut. This model replaced the earlier Model 1813, which featured a .69" bore barrel, and also made some modifications to the stock as requested by the Government. Between 1817 and 1820, 19,374 pistols had been delivered to Government Arsenals.
At some point afterwards during the 1830s-1840s, this model 1816 pistol was converted to percussion, and had the lock entirely replaced with an engravted example marked A.T. Baxter / Balto.. This Baltimore-based gunsmith was known for his high grade flintlock to percussion conversions. The barrel also had a barrel shaped engraved bolster installed where the touch hole was to complete the conversion. Converted pistols such as this would later see much use during the Civil War, particularly in the South, which did not have the industrial capacity of the North.
The pistol measures 15 1/2" overall with a .54 Caliber 9" barrel. It has all iron mounts including a large skull crusher butt cap, iron trigger guard, side plate and large double-strapped barrel band which supports a brass fore sight. The breech of the barrel is proof marked P / U.S.. There are also the ghosts of the inspector's cartouches on the left hand side of the stock to the rear of the side plate.
The stock is in very good condition, with a lovely color, showing some cracking along the grain on both sides. There is still a wooden ramrod under the barrel, but it looks to be a replacement. We checked the lock, and it is functional, but does not have a half-cock position, only a full cock position.
A very interesting percussion converted early U.S. Martial pistol, ready to add to your collection!
