Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This was the first percussion pistol ordered by the U.S. Government and was intended for the U.S. NAVY. 2,000 pieces were ordered from N.P. AMES of Springfield, Massachusetts as the Model of 1842, which were all delivered up until 1847.
Each had a .54" smooth bore barrel of almost 6" and measured almost 12 1/2" in overall length. The locks were fitted with an "internal" hammer on the interior of the lock plate which was marked with the Maker's name and address:
N.P. AMES
SPRINGFIELD
MASS
The lock plate on this example is stamped across the tail with U.S.N. over the manufacture date of 1843. There is still a P proof mark on the barrel breech, but the other markings have been worn away by powder burn. The butt cap, trigger guard and single barrel band are all made of brass and the pistol is fitted with a "trapped" swivel ramrod which the sailor could not lose.
Slight pitting stain remain on the barrel but the pistol is is fine working order, with the lock holding correctly at half cock, and firing at full. Fully cleaned and ready to display!

IMA considers all of our antique guns as non-firing, inoperable and/or inert. Title 18, U.S. Code, Section 921(a)(16) defines antique firearms as all guns made prior to 1899. This law exempts antique firearms from any form of gun control or special engineering because they are not legally considered firearms. No FFL, C&R or any license is required to possess, transport, sell or trade Antique guns. All rifles and muskets sold by IMA that were manufactured prior to 1899 are considered Antiques by the US BATF (United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco & Firearms). Therefore, all of IMA's Antique guns may be shipped to all US States and most nations around the world.
These antique guns are not sold in "live" condition. They are sold as collector's items or as "wall hangers". Any attempt at restoring an antique gun to be operational is strongly discouraged and is done so at the risk of the customer. By purchasing an antique gun from IMA you thereby release IMA, its employees and corporate officers from any and all liability associated with use of our Antique guns.
