Item Description
Original Items: One of a Kind. Grouping attributed to Kern Merrill, a sailor who served aboard the U.S.S. Arizona in the mid-1920’s. The grouping includes a thirty-six pieces of correspondence (thirty-five letters and one Western Union Telegram), along with a WWI-1920’s era U.S. Navy Issue Sailor’s Flat Cap with an original U.S.S. ARIZONA tally originally fitted.
The correspondence consists mostly of letters penned by Merrill sent to his mother. Some are written on different variations of U.S.S. Arizona letterhead or U.S.S. Arizona themed stationary. The content varies, but most of the letters detail shipboard life, various ports of call around the world, and the expected typical non-military related content. Additional research could be conducted on Merrill and his military service if one desired.
Items associated with the U.S.S. Arizona are seldom found on the collector’s market today, especially those as early as this particular grouping. This is an outstanding piece of Arizona related history that is more than simply a material object, but offers primary source material that gives one a view into the daily shipboard life of a sailor in that time and place.
