Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. Just purchased at a recent military auction! Here is a very nice octagonal barreled mid 19th Century U.S. Percussion Hunting rifle, with a lovely "Tiger" flame maple half stock. The 32" long barrel measures approximately .41" in bore diameter, with traces of rifling, so we believe it was originally in .39", a very common bore measurement for the time. It must have seen extensive use during its service life to have become this worn. Overall length of the rifle is approximately 47 3/4".
The lovely honey colored stock features a straight pistol grip with an elaborate nickel trigger guard with two finger holds. The stock ends in a crescent shaped brass butt plate, with nickel circular cap box on the right side. It is fitted with a very nice trade lock showing a hunting scene as well as the initials R. B. engraved in the center of the lock, probably the owners initials. The maker seems to be D. BAIRD, as marked on the top of the barrel, which is fitted with a simple adjustable rear sight. We checked the lock, and it is functional, but does not appear to have any provision for a half cock position. There is a wooden ramrod under the barrel, but we feel it may be a working life replacement.
In very nice condition and ready to display!
