Original U.S. Pennsylvania Percussion Smoothbore Gun by J. Hapgood with British Trade Lock

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a half stocked Pennsylvania "rifle", now a smooth bore fowling piece. It almost certainly started life as a Rifle and was bored out to this large .69 caliber. It comes complete with brass patch box, butt plate and trigger guard.

The barrel is marked:- J. HAPGOOD / SHREWSBURY standing for JOAB HAPGOOD who worked in BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS from 1804 to 1900. The barrel measures 28" and the gun is 44" in overall length. As far as we can tell this lock has always been in percussion and was never Flintlock. The left side of the skock has a built in cheek piece which bears an a large oval German Silver plaque engraved with a Pheasant among foliage. Gun comes with later wood ram rod.

The lock is marked R. / ASHMORE / WARRANTED, and has some attractive foliage engraving. R. Ashmore is known to have been a gunmaker in London circa 1768-1785, and his sons followed him.

Out of the attic after many years of storage, ready to clean and display!
