Item Description
Original Item. Only One Available. This is a very nice American "Under-Hammer" Percussion rifle, a rather unique design that has the percussion hammer and cap nipple on the underside of the rifle. Maker's Name E. MANSUR is stamped along the top barrel flat, but is unlisted in STOCKEL's volumes of Gun Makers. The heavy Octagonal barrel is 32" in length and has a heavily rifled bore of approximately .55". The under-hammer action is directly in front of the trigger guard, which actually also serves as the main spring for the lock.
The butt is shaped like a Pennsylvania long rifle and has an elaborate GERMAN SILVER wrap along the top and bottom rears of the butt stock and then around to encompass the butt plate. The German Silver is elaborately carved with American scenes of Bears, Native Americans, the Federal Eagle and a Cornucopia denoting plenty. There are a couple of addition Star plaques in the stock and the action is wrapped in an engraved copper two part sleeve the right half of which is a replacement and is not engraved.
Clearly a specialist's rifle, intended for extreme accuracy. It has a long back sight with elevation adjustment screw and the barrel has twin silver inlaid rails around seven of the eight sides of the barrel at the back end.
Looks uncomfortable but no doubt did the job of putting meat on the table back in the 1840's. All cleaned and ready to display, an early plains rifle.
