Item Description
Original Items: Only One Lot of 2 Available. The Eagle Head Sword was prominently adopted by militias and the American military shortly after the American Revolution. During the Federal period, it reached its peak fading into the 1840's. There are so many different variations and styles of these swords, almost no two are alike, making for wonderful collector items!
The swords in this lot are in lovely condition considering that they are nearly 200 years old! The hilts have the expected play and movements in them and the etching on the blades have darkened.
The Swords In This Lot:
War of 1812 Era Officer's Eagle Head Pommel Sword with Engraved Blade & Ribbed Ivory Grip: The War of 1812 was a very strange War. The Americans invaded Canada, the British retaliated and burned the White House, Peace was declared and then the British lost the Battle of New Orleans because no one realized the War was over!
Here we have a very upmarket original Eagle Headed U.S. Officer's sword from the 1812 War period. The sword is all brass mounted with a standard "D" hand guard and a very nice "open mouth" Eagle pommel. The grip is carved ribbed bone more than likely ivory, and does have the expected cracks from age, with some repair attempts made at one point. The eagle's head is VERY well executed, and there is still lots of the original gilt finish on the hilt.
The sword is 36 inches long overall, with a straight 31 inch single edged blade, with a broad fuller. It looks like at one point the sword was etched and partly gilt, very common on officer's swords, however the ornamentation is almost completely gone. Oxidation and wear have removed almost all, with only a small amount left near the cross guard.
Pre Civil War / War Time Used Militia Dress Sword: Here we have a very upmarket original Eagle Headed U.S. Militia Officer's sword from the immediate post 1812 War period. The sword is all brass mounted without a standard "D" hand guard as these utilized a chain and a very nice "open mouth" Eagle pommel. The grip is carved ribbed bone more than likely ivory, and does have the expected cracks from age, with some repair attempts made at one point. The eagle's head is VERY well executed, and there is little of the original gilt finish on the hilt.
The blade has very beautiful acid etched patriotic motifs on both sides of the blade. Unfortunately these etchings have faded and been worn smooth due to years of cleaning, but are still visible.
Both swords are truly beautiful examples of the sought after Eagle Headed swords. Comes more than ready for further research and display.
