Original U.S. Remington-Hepburn No.3 Falling Block Sporting Rifle in .25-20 Caliber - Serial 9834

Item Description

Original Item: One Only. The "Remington-Hepburn" falling block single shot rifles were designed by Lewis Hepburn, who had patented the action in 1879. These were manufactured manufactured during the late 19th century with approximately 10,000 in total production. As these were sporting rifles, they could be ordered with a multitude of options, calibers, and trim levels. This is the standard sporting rifle, with a heavy octagonal barrel in .25-20.

The top barrel flat is marked with the standard late 19th century Remington Address marking:

REMINGTON ARMS CO. ILION. N.Y. U.S.A.

The receiver is marked on the left side with the patent information:

HEPBURN'S PAT.
OCT. 7TH 1879

The underside of the barrel is marked with 25.20, indicating the caliber, which we believe is .25-20 Stevens. We however do not have any of these cartridges so we are not able to test the chamber fit. The serial number marked on the end of the trigger guard is 9834, which is also stamped underneath the barrel and on the receiver end of the forestock. Assembly number 1856 / 7 is stamped right next to the receiver as well.

The metal surfaces are in very good condition, especially the barrel, which has almost all of the original bluing, with the edges of each facet slightly worn. The receiver, originally bright steel, has faded a bit, with speckled staining, but no rust pitting or other issues. The action cycles correctly, with a functional ejector, and dry fires as well, with the hammer properly bouncing back. The bore shows clear rifling, but is also somewhat dirty, with fouling in the grooves.

The stocks are in very good condition, with a lovely glow from years of polishing. THe fore stock has some scratches and dents, but no chips or major wear, and also has a nice inlaid ebony V shaped insert at the front. The butt stock has a very nice checkered pistol grip, and also shows light wear. There is some cracking near the receiver tang on the left side, and the bottom of the pistol grip also has a crack through it, which stops where it rejoins the butt stock.

A very attractive late 19th century sporting rifle, fully cleaned and ready to display!
