Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This is a great U.S. Revolutionary War Era German Flintlock Jäger Rifle, intended for front line "hunter" troops. These were among the earliest rifles widely in use, and were very often later converted to percussion. This example however was not, and still is in the original flintlock configuration.
It has a heavily rifled 29 1/2" octagonal barrel, and is 44" in overall length. As it had a rifled barrel, it was able to achieve greater accuracy, and did not need the long barrel that muskets were equipped with. The shorter length also made it easier for the troops to move through difficult terrain. It is equipped with a fine Walnut butt stock, complete with sliding patch box cover, a distinctive aspect of the design. The mounts are all of heavy brass. The folding rear sight still retains the delicate folding leaf section, often lost. Comes complete with brass tipped wood ramrod.
Condition is very nice, with the expected wear of age and cleaning over the decades. This has unfortunately removed most of the original markings, which may have also been scrubbed prior to sale out of service. The wooden stock shows multiple different repairs in the past, with sections of wood grafted in. There is even a sliver of wood in the patch box, along with a spare lock screw and another screw, probably from a past restoration.
The lock on the rifle functions well, with a strong mainspring. It correctly holds at half cock, firing at full. The rifling in the barrel is still strong, and the bore is mostly bright, with fouling and oxidation in the grooves. It does not look to have actually been fired much. A most attractive rifle, heavy duty and compact.
Fully cleaned and ready to display!
