Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This is a great U.S. Revolutionary War Era German Flintlock Jäger Rifle, intended for front line "hunter" troops. These were among the earliest rifles widely in use, and were very often later converted to percussion. This example however was not, and still is in the original flintlock configuration.
It has a heavily rifled 29" octagonal barrel, and is 44" in overall length. As it had a rifled barrel, it was able to achieve greater accuracy, and did not need the long barrel that muskets were equipped with. The shorter length also made it easier for the troops to move through difficult terrain. It is equipped with a fine Walnut butt stock that has a cheek piece on the left butt, and the mounts are all of heavy brass. Comes complete with brass tipped wood ramrod.
Condition is very nice, with the expected light wear from age and cleaning over the decades. The only marking on it is a makers mark on the breech end of the barrel, which we have not been able to identify. Rifles that were exported often had markings scrubbed or omitted so that their origin could not be traced. The wood stock is in very good shape, with a lovely color, and the only crack we can see is on the right side on the woodline in front of the lock.
The lock on the rifle functions well, however as it is a set trigger design, the front rod trigger must be "set" by the rear trigger during the process of cocking the lock. The rear trigger should only be "set" once the lock is at half cock, as it will not hold full cock until this is done. It also will fire at half cock when the trigger is set. It is possible that it is slightly out of adjustment. The rifling in the barrel is still visible, but there is wear, as well as fouling and oxidation in the grooves. It definitely looks to have seen some degree of use. A most attractive rifle, heavy duty and compact.
Fully cleaned and ready to display!
