Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. These swords are without a doubt one of the most attractive looking ones out there. Often confused with a Militia Officer’s sword, this Army Officer’s sword is in impeccable condition for being nearly 190 years old! This is one of those ultra-rare items that one doesn’t come across very often, and we are quite pleased to offer it.
Swords of this design are pre-Civil War, rough estimated date circa 1830-1840. The cruciform-style brass crossguard and chappe is in good shape, with limited patina and much of the original gilt retained. The pommel is a cast of a perched American Eagle and holds one end of the double chains connected to the knuckle guard. The chains are somewhat tarnished from time and exposure.
The blade is believed to be an 1834 pattern with a double-edge and thin central fuller that runs about a third of the blade The steel still retains some of its original shine, with good edge and point, and lightly frosted etching is somewhat Patriotic in nature.
The scabbard is in wonderful condition and without any dents, bends or extensive damage. Just like the sword, the scabbard has retained much of the original gold gilt. There are floral designs etched into the scabbard as well as a lovely Eagle clutching an American flag shield.
This is truly an exceptionally rare pre-Civil war item, and something that not only isn’t seen everyday, but an item we won’t expect to have up for grabs for too long.
