Original Grouping. One-of-a-Kind. This is a tremendous grouping to a Captain of Company L, 2nd Infantry Regiment, who served during the Spanish-American War. The grouping includes an extremely scarce Infantry Officer’s M1898 Tropical coat with blue cuffs, collars, and shoulder boards hand-sewn on, likely by the officer himself. As the uniform regulations were all very new at this time, many soldiers and officers altered their uniforms themselves. The grouping also includes a gorgeous but worn Private-purchase M1889 style campaign hat, with three air vent grommets to each side, and an officer’s hat cord.
The tropical coat has two lovely Captain’s rank pins on the shoulder boards, with the collar bearing 2nd Infantry Company L collar insignia. This could indicate the 2nd U.S. Infantry, 2nd U.S. Volunteer Infantry, the 2nd Massachusetts Infantry, 2nd West Virginia, 2nd New York, without any name we are unable to say for certain. The buttons are all retained, and upon inspection of the blue material on the cuffs, shoulder boards, and collars, it is clear the pieces were sewn-on by hand, likely by the Captain himself, which really gives this set a ton of character. This set came out of a long-standing museum ranging from the Revolutionary War to Vietnam.
The private-purchase campaign hat has some heavy damage to the wool as shown, with several holes that were at one point stitched. The hat has a lovely sewn-on brim and is of gray construction, a very unique piece. There are three grommets to each side, and the original period-correct hat cord is still attached. The hat still looks fine for display, and really ties the grouping together.
This is a tremendous uniform grouping with some very scarce pieces. The M1898 tropical coat has become one of the more difficult to find, and this example is one of the best we’ve seen. Don’t miss out on this amazing grouping!
